What Makes Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Unique

Fire Rock Geyser eruption

While every hotel at the Walt Disney World Resort has something that makes it special (the Monorail at the Contemporary, the oversize icons at Pop Century, and the savannas at the Animal Kingdom Lodge), there’s just something about the Wilderness Lodge that takes it to the next level.

Some would argue that it’s the hotel’s lobby that makes all the difference. It is one of the most awe-inspiring and breathtaking lobbies on property. The Wilderness Lodge lobby should be added to the “must-see” list for anyone visiting Walt Disney World, even if you aren’t a guest at the hotel.

The seven-story lobby features an 82-foot-tall stone fireplace (sit in the rocking chairs at the fireplace and you’ll never want to leave!), two 55-foot-tall totem poles, incredible chandeliers, and a bubbling creek that travels down to the hotel’s pool.

The totem poles are referred to as the Eagle totem and the Raven totem and were commissioned by Disney from one of the world’s leading Native American historians and totem pole artists.

Of course, the lobby isn’t the only thing that makes the resort unique. Where else on property can you see a geyser erupt every hour? The hotel’s Firerock Geyser erupts each day between about 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. and was inspired by Old Faithful at Yellowstone National Park.

In addition to the grand lobby and the geyser, the Wilderness Lodge is also home to one of the most fun dining experiences on property – the Whispering Canyon Cafe. If you’re looking for good food and some good laughs, stop by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and make sure you ask for ketchup, straws, and a order a large drink. You’ll be happy you did.

When you’re a guest at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge you often feel as if you’re not in Florida, but that you really are at a lodge at a national park. We think this means Disney has succeeded with the themeing of the hotel.
